Leg wound – What is the best treatment

Here is an example of a leg wound or ulcer.  This has been open for a number of months and is bleeding at the time of treatment.  This is not infected even though there is some redness around the wound.  As you can see the patient has some brown coloration of the skin around the wound that is from the iron in the blood from the constant swelling of his legs.  The treatment of choice at this point is compression.  This can be done with an unna boot wrap that is left on for 5-7 days.  The patient is seen back every week until the wound is healed and afterward he will be fit for compression stockings.
