Step 8 – Shoes and Off-Loading

STEP 8: Shoes and Off-Loading: You really shouldn’t be walking a lot if you have a foot wound. Track how much you’re walking, even at home. You’d be surprised to learn how much you walk around your house. Here are some tips about how to take pressure off your wound:

  • Ask your doctor about special shoes/devices to help off-load your foot. These include a roll-about, wheelchair, total contact cast, removable cast walker, half-shoe, and surgical shoe. All of them work to get pressure OFF of the bottom of your foot.
  • Have your foot measured. You’re probably wearing the wrong size shoe and this is bad.
  • Shoes are VERY important. Make sure you’re wearing the right shoe AND size!
